Bought a membership for rootconf, got the chance to attend the tropical edition on databases. Sat for some interesting talks like incremental computation for database by Mihai Budiu, a talk by Shomik Ghose who is a database engineer at Antithesis and talked about PBTs at scale for an OLAP database that they rolled out (pangolin). Been waiting to get a membership for 2 years and decided to put in my first salary in this. Really looking forward to the future events (there is an LSM tree workshop coming up the next Saturday)

Ended the week by meeting up with my friends during the Bengaluru systems meet-up, which made me realise how insanely good people are. Rohith Suresh took us over understanding stack traces, how we can still get a good stack trace with -fomit-frame-pointer and gdb’d his way through the entire demo. I’ve always known of how powerful gdb was, but today I witnessed it being used to another extreme. I could not keep up with maintaining notes for this meet up (just was in awe watching the entire demo + explanation of his exploratory work), but here are some things I came across. But not a match for the 1 hour walkthrough on stack traces.

Work is great so far, spent the last week meeting up with the entire team in the 6 monthly team meet up (no one comes on site to work since covid). Besides my main tasks at work, during breaks I spend some time just going through some hidden confluence documents on some of their architectures and other things in general. Have definitely exploited the mini snacks counter in my floor so far. In a way, the office being empty gives a nice environment to get work done.

I’ve been spoilt by good coffee. Essentially went from having coffee for the sake of staying awake and now purely for the taste of it. All began when I stole a good cup of americano from my sister @ The Old House, now I’m pretty much beyond the point of no return. Have only had my coffee black since the start of 2026.

Since then I’ve gone out and bought my first three bags of coffee and attempt in making coffee on a daily basis with a small French press my mom got from IKEA. Still pretty inexperienced in working with a french press, having quite a lot of bad pour days. Still went ahead and bought a small mug that I can take around with me with home brewed coffee.

Regardless of the output, I find the experience really fun. @anirudhrowjee took @anirudhsudhir, Varuni and I around a couple of roasters near TERI post rootconf, ended up buying a bag of Amaltas Blend (went for a lighter roast this time around to make it a bit easier to brew at home - I don’t really have a temperature controlled kettle and heat my water up in a microwave).

As mentioned in my previous inked, I’m trying to keep this little page alive. Hopefully I keep my word on the same on small incremental updates over the weeks, just to have something to look back at after a couple of years. See you in another 7 days 🌊
